Arrecife in Lanzarote
The capital of Lanzarote, Arrecife is central for shops, bars and historical features. The Charco de San Gines is described by local people as a natural lake of tranquil waters whose level rises and falls along with the ocean tides. It is connected via a small channel to the sea and is used as a mooring haven for small boats. Arrecife’s first pieces of architecture were built beside this lake and the city's first church was also built nearby.
Fantastic historical places to visit include the Castillo de San Jose overlooking the Arrecife harbour, Puente de las Bolas + the Castillo de San Gabriel were built on a small island facing the centre of the city in order to defend itself from pirates and Saracens who were known for attacking the island.
